As of Dec. 2017, this shop is unfortunately closed…a sad day for Soba. But it still makes for great pictures, as below.
Okuaizu in Saitama is not your average soba noodles restaurant. You can literally order a mountain of soba noodles.

You can order the the soba or udon hot or cold and the prices are completely reasonable. Most combo meals are about a 1,000 Yen (10 USD), even when you order “Omori”, or the big portion. In a combo meal, the usual soba / udon trimmings are available, whether shrimp tempura or kaki (the plate-sized vegetable fry).

It’s easiest to get there by car. The train works as well but it’s a long walk from the nearest station, Kuki. Saitama Prefecture is just northwest of Tokyo.
