Eating gyoza in Utsunomiya, Tochigi is a must. North of Tokyo, it’s become the gyoza (fried dumpling) capital of Japan.
Restaurant Utsunomiya Gyozakan (宇都宮餃子館) serves more than 12 types of gyoza…and even gyoza ramen!
Cheese Gyoza, Super Spicy Gyoza…12 Gyoza Types!
The 12 gyoza choices include cheese, super spicy, maitake mushrooms, shiso, and shiso.
Super spicy (gekikara) is my personal favorite. Order a mixed plate and it’s a surprise each time, since they all look the same on the outside.
Their gyoza tick all the boxes – super crispy outer shell and a smooth, juicy interior.
Gyoza Ramen?
Gyoza ramen, why not? It includes 3 gyoza toppings. The wraps are much thicker and more crumbly, so the broth doesn’t make them too soggy.
It’s a simple ramen – nothing fancy or high-level. But it gets the job done.
Utsunomiya Gyozakan has many branches in Tochigi prefecture. The branch closest to Utsunomiya station is where I go for my gyoza (宇都宮餃子館 西口駅前中央店).
