Go Chome House: Creamy Ie-kei Ramen in Nakano's Back Alleys

Go Chome House is one of the better ie-kei ramen shops in Tokyo, tucked into the back streets of Nakano — and it's not just me saying so.

Go Chome House in Nakano does creamy Ie-kei style ramen

It picked up a finalist spot in the tonkotsu newcomer category at the TRY Awards not long after opening, and it's built a genuinely loyal local following since.

A Tiny Shop in the Right Neighborhood

I liked this one a lot. It's tucked into one of Nakano's narrow side streets, which suits it.

It's a tiny shop with barely enough room to turn around in, six seats at the counter, matching the cramped, lived-in coziness of the alleys around it.

A Creamier Take on Ie-kei

On the ramen itself: this is a fairly straightforward ie-kei bowl (Yokohama style ramen). But the broth leans noticeably pork bone creamier than what you'll get from shops directly part of the Yoshimuraya lineage. If you've had Musashiya or Suzukiya, that's the comparison that clicked for me. The soup has less of that sharp, saline hit you get from the saltier shoyu end of the ie-kei spectrum.

Let's call it a gentler ie-kei". The noodles, made my Miwakaya Seimen, get a lot of love too. They're thick and chewy, as they should be. Add in a slab of chashu pork, spinach, a sheet of seaweed draped over the rim, and you've got a bowl that doesn't reinvent anything, just executes it with care.

Service Comes With the Territory

One thing I'll flag honestly: don't go in expecting warm hospitality. It's a one-man operation behind the counter, which means service is brisk, borderline curt. The focus is entirely on getting bowls out fast and hot, not on making conversation.

Nakano's Alleyways make for a quaint setting

There's also no one calling you in when a seat opens up; if you're waiting outside, you're expected to watch the door and slide in yourself. None of that bothered me — I go to ie-kei shops for the broth, not the small talk — but if that's going to sour your experience, go in with the right expectations.

If you're already a fan of the creamier ie-kei style, Go Choume House (横浜家系らーめん 五丁目ハウス) belongs on your list next time you're in Nakano.
